AKURE, Nigeria – Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), are disrupted after the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) begins an indefinite strike over unpaid salary arrears and the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.
The AAUA ASUU strike takes effect after the union says repeated efforts to secure action from the Ondo State Government over its demands have failed.
The branch chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, confirms the industrial action in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure on Tuesday.
Oshodi says the union has repeatedly written to the state government and requested meetings over the implementation of the agreement but has received no meaningful response.
“We are not ready to listen to anything like commitment again. What we want now is action,” Oshodi says.
The union is demanding the implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement as well as payment of outstanding salary arrears dating back to January.
Oshodi says lecturers will remain on strike until concrete steps are taken to address the demands.
The latest action comes about a week after the union suspended an earlier strike over unpaid salaries following the payment of some outstanding wages.
The 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement includes an upgraded salary structure, a 40% salary review for academic staff and the payment of accumulated salary arrears.
Oshodi says ASUU remains open to dialogue with the authorities but insists that discussions must result in actual implementation.
The renewed strike is expected to affect lectures, examinations and other academic activities at the university.
The development also comes amid a series of labour disputes involving ASUU branches at Nigerian universities.
The ASUU branch at Imo State University, Owerri, recently declared an indefinite strike over outstanding welfare and conditions-of-service issues.
