Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush-Alebiosu
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has completed more than 50 kilometres of channelisation works across major waterways as part of an ambitious push to expand ferry transportation, reduce travel pressure on roads and improve commuter safety.
Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush Alebiosu, disclosed the development on Thursday during a ministerial briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ infrastructure agenda.
He said the project was designed to improve navigation, remove hazards and open new ferry corridors linking riverine communities and commercial districts across the state.
“The channelisation works were carried out to improve navigation across Lagos waterways, open up new ferry routes, and strengthen safety for water transport operators and commuters,” Alebiosu said.
According to him, the completed works cover strategic routes including Ikorodu–Mende, Ikorodu–Agboyi, Five Cowries–Lekki Lagoon–Parkview, Banana Island and Ilado–Ilashe–Odofin.
The commissioner explained that navigation buoys have also been installed along the waterways to guide ferry movement and reduce accidents caused by submerged wrecks and poor visibility.
He added that the government is deploying modern concrete floating pontoons at jetties in Agboyi Ketu, Ijegun Egba, Bayeku, Ebute Ero, Ijede, Apa, Mile 2 and Mowo to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
Alebiosu noted that the infrastructure expansion would strengthen multimodal transportation, ease traffic congestion and stimulate economic activities in waterfront communities.
He further stated that the intervention would help tackle flooding and erosion challenges affecting several riverine settlements while positioning Lagos as a leading hub for sustainable urban water transportation in Africa.
