BORNO, Nigeria – Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attempted midnight assault by suspected ISWAP fighters on a military base in Borno State, recovering weapons and ammunition after a fierce gun battle.
Military authorities say the attack targeted the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori late Saturday night but was successfully foiled through coordinated land and air operations.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force Northeast, Sani Uba, says insurgents approached the base from the Mandunari axis around midnight before troops detected their movement.
He explains that soldiers immediately launched defensive operations, preventing the attackers from breaching the camp.
According to the military, troops responded with heavy firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat while suffering significant casualties.
Air support from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigerian Army Aviation was later deployed to target fleeing fighters and reinforce ground troops.
Recovered items from the scene include one General Purpose Machine Gun, two PKT machine guns, five AK-47 rifles and belts of assorted ammunition.
The military says injured soldiers are responding to treatment, while pursuit operations continue to track down escaping insurgents.
Authorities describe the operation as part of sustained efforts to maintain pressure on terrorist groups operating across Nigeria’s North-East region.
