ABUJA, Nigeria – The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to an international cruise, with authorities urging vigilance but assuring low public risk.
The cluster originates from the MV Hondius voyage from Ushuaia to the Canary Islands, with infections reported among 147 passengers and crew.
As of 4 May 2026, seven cases—two confirmed and five suspected—are identified, with three deaths recorded and one patient in critical condition in South Africa.
Symptoms reportedly progress from fever to severe respiratory complications, including acute respiratory distress syndrome.
“Africa CDC confirms no evidence of sustained transmission within African countries,” the agency says, adding that hantaviruses are typically spread through rodent exposure rather than human contact.
A coordinated international response involving South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Cabo Verde is underway.
Authorities advise travellers to maintain hygiene and seek medical care if symptoms develop after recent travel.
