LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria awards a major bridge reconstruction project in Lagos, citing urgent structural risks and long-term infrastructure needs.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, oversees the handover of Carter Bridge reconstruction to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation in Lagos.
Investigations reveal worsening structural defects beneath Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge.
“Defects were increasing at geometrical progression,” Umahi says, noting underwater damage to bridge piles.
Experts confirm that repairs would cost nearly double the price of a new structure, prompting a full rebuild.
The new design will include a cable-stayed section to enhance navigation and aesthetics.
The ₦545 billion project is expected to last 36 months, funded through government and external financing.
Umahi says due process was followed, with the contractor selected after competitive bidding.
Authorities also announce partial closure of Eko Bridge due to damage caused by illegal dredging.
“We will not allow people to endanger their lives,” the minister says, confirming emergency repairs are underway.
