ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to investigate the death of Arise Television anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery in Abuja.
Maduagwu, a producer and presenter, was attacked at her Katampe residence on Sunday. She later died from gunshot wounds.
In a statement Tuesday, Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga said the president received the news “with deep sorrow.”
“Ms Maduagwu was a promising journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner,” Tinubu said, ordering immediate investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.
He extended condolences to her family and colleagues, stressing his government’s commitment to citizens’ safety. “We will strengthen crime-fighting measures to protect every Nigerian,” he added.
Media unions condemned the killing and urged swift justice. “Journalists must not be silenced by violence,” the Nigeria Union of Journalists declared.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said investigations are underway.
