BAUCHI, Nigeria – The Bauchi State Government has received 45 motorcycles from Global Affairs Canada through UNICEF to strengthen healthcare delivery in hard-to-reach communities.
The motorcycles were handed over on Monday to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to support immunisation, maternal, and child health services.
UNICEF Chief of Office in Bauchi, Nuzhat Rafique, said the intervention targets underserved populations, particularly women, children, and adolescents facing barriers to healthcare access.
“These motorcycles are meant to support outreach to deprived communities where access to health facilities is limited,” she said.
She noted that immunisation remains a key entry point for reaching zero-dose children and mothers who lack antenatal care, while raising concerns about early marriage and high maternal mortality rates in the region.
Receiving the donation, Commissioner for Health Sani Mohammed Dambam commended the partners and assured proper utilisation of the motorcycles.
“These motorcycles must be used strictly for the purpose they were donated. Any violation will attract sanctions,” he warned.
UNICEF Health Officer Seyi Olosunde said the motorcycles would also enhance supervision of community health workers and expand access to primary healthcare services.
Authorities say the intervention is expected to improve health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations in remote communities across Bauchi State.
