DAMATURU, Nigeria – Nigerian troops repel a coordinated midnight terrorist assault in Yobe State, killing 24 insurgents after a fierce three-hour gun battle.
The military says fighters attempted to overrun a base in Kukareta before troops launched a rapid counteroffensive.
“Troops executed a coordinated response and forced a retreat,” says Lt Col Sani Uba.
The attack began shortly after midnight and lasted until about 3:00 a.m., with troops maintaining control of the location.
Security forces recover a large cache of weapons, including 18 AK-47 rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and mortar tubes.
Two soldiers are wounded but stabilised, while an armoured vehicle is damaged during the exchange.
“Twenty-four terrorists have been neutralised so far,” Uba confirms.
Military sources say follow-up operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents along escape routes.
The army describes the defence as a demonstration of operational readiness and resilience in the North-East.
Residents are assured that sustained offensives will continue to dismantle terrorist networks and restore security.
