ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent killings and abductions in Nigeria’s North-Central region, describing the attacks as a national security emergency and warning that the country must not become a “killing field.”
Obi made the remarks in a statement posted on his X account on Sunday following deadly attacks in Benue, Plateau and Niger states, where dozens of people have reportedly been killed, abducted and displaced.
“What is happening to our country? In recent days, deadly attacks have struck Benue, Plateau and Niger States, three contiguous states in Nigeria’s North-Central region.”»
Obi cites the reported killing of at least 23 people in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, noting that residents claim the death toll exceeds 30, while more than 45 houses were reportedly destroyed.
He also references attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where reports indicate that over 40 people were killed and more than 100 others abducted, although the figures remain disputed.
According to Obi, the violence comes amid continued attacks in Benue State, where communities have suffered repeated killings, kidnappings and the destruction of homes and livelihoods.
“Nigeria is not officially at war, yet citizens are being attacked in their villages, abducted after prayers, driven from their homes and stripped of their farms.
“I urge governments at all levels to wake up to their responsibility and take urgent and decisive action to end this madness once and for all.”
“We cannot keep counting bodies after every attack. We must prevent these attacks before they happen. Protecting lives and property is the most basic duty of the government. Nigerians deserve nothing less. Nigeria must not become a killing field.”
