ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) raise alarm over suspected counterfeit toothpaste circulating in Nigerian markets, warning of potential health risks.
The agency says the alert follows a complaint received by its surveillance unit in Kaduna State, where officials discover unregistered products during a market inspection.
NAFDAC identifies the items as “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g”, describing them as likely imitations lacking regulatory approval.
“These products do not meet required standards and may pose risks to consumers,” the agency states. NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Over Circulation of Suspected Fake Toothpaste Products
Investigators reveal that the seller cannot provide documentation or traceable sources, claiming the goods were purchased from a roaming vendor.
The regulator notes that the items lack batch numbers and official registration details, key indicators of authenticity.
NAFDAC confirms that the products have been removed from circulation while investigations continue to identify distributors.
“We have directed nationwide surveillance to prevent further spread of unregistered products,” the agency adds.
Consumers and traders are urged to remain vigilant and verify products before purchase or use.
The agency also encourages reporting of suspicious items through its official channels.
Public health experts warn that counterfeit personal care products can expose users to harmful substances, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement and consumer awareness.
