ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Service Commission (PSC) has introduced a new rule mandating the retirement of officers who fail promotion examinations after three attempts.
Announcing the policy in Abuja on Monday, Chairman of the PSC, Hashimu Argungu, described the measure as a crucial reform to strengthen professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.
“Any officer that fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence,” Argungu said. “Contemporary policing requires expertise, knowledge, and continuous professional growth.”
The latest examination cycle tested senior officers across several ranks, including one Assistant Inspector General of Police, two Commissioners of Police, eleven Deputy Commissioners, and sixteen Assistant Commissioners.
Argungu confirmed that promotion examinations will now be compulsory for all future career advancements, ensuring only competent officers rise through the ranks.
The Chairman also disclosed that the PSC is tightening its verification processes, after past instances where officers who had retired or died were mistakenly promoted.
The PSC maintained that the policy would restore public confidence in the police by ensuring only qualified officers progress in their careers.
