ABUJA, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve long-standing welfare and funding disputes affecting public universities.
In a statement signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, after the union’s National Executive Council meeting at the University of Abuja, members accused the government of neglect and failure to honour agreements.
“If, at the end of the fourteen days, the Federal Government fails, the union may embark on a two-week warning strike, followed by a total and indefinite strike,” Piwuna warned.
ASUU’s demands include renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, revitalisation funding, settlement of salary arrears, and a sustainable financing framework for universities.
The Federal Ministry of Education recently set up a committee led by Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan to review ASUU’s proposals. However, no decisions have been announced.
The union cautioned that failure to meet its demands would disrupt academic activities nationwide, stressing that industrial action is a last resort to defend Nigeria’s public universities.
