Monguno, Nigeria – Several soldiers, including senior officers, are killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents ambush Nigerian troops near the 242 Forward Operating Base in Borno State.
Military sources say the attack occurs around 2 a.m. on Monday as a reinforcement team responds to intelligence on an impending assault.
The convoy reportedly hits improvised explosive devices before coming under heavy gunfire.
“A Colonel and a Lieutenant Colonel were killed alongside about 10 soldiers,” a source says.
The operation, linked to Operation Hadin Kai, is described as highly coordinated, with insurgents targeting the troops en route.
Casualty figures remain unconfirmed, while injured personnel receive treatment at a medical facility.
Efforts to reach Lt. Col. Sani Uba for official comment are unsuccessful.
Security analysts warn the incident reflects evolving insurgent tactics, including the use of landmines and ambushes against reinforcement teams.
The latest attack heightens concerns over renewed assaults on military formations in Borno.
