AKURE, Nigeria – Police in Ondo State arrest five suspects after foiling a suspected cult meeting in Akungba-Akoko, following intelligence provided by local residents.
Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad carry out the raid after receiving credible information on March 27 about a gathering at a private residence.
“Based on the intelligence received, operatives were promptly deployed… and the suspects were arrested without incident,” police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh says.
Authorities identify those arrested as Adesuye Dare, Ayeerun Joshua, Ojo Omole, Adu Dele and Akeju Idowu.
Police say the suspects were allegedly chanting slogans linked to cult groups, raising alarm within the community.
Preliminary investigations suggest links to the Eiye Confraternity, a group associated with violent activities and unlawful gatherings.
The suspects remain in custody and are providing information to aid further investigations, with efforts ongoing to track other members.
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal commends the swift operation and credits community intelligence for the breakthrough.
Police urge youths to avoid cultism, warning of serious legal consequences, and call on parents to monitor their wards.
Authorities confirm the suspects will face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations.
