LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has ordered shipping operators to stop applying newly approved tariffs, citing unresolved concerns from port users.
In a directive issued on Friday in Lagos, the regulator mandates an immediate return to the previous tariff structure.
“All affected operators are mandated to revert strictly to the tariff regime previously in force,” the council states.
The NSC warns that failure to comply will result in sanctions under existing laws.
The agency says the suspension is necessary to ensure fair competition, transparency, and sector stability.
Officials confirm that consultations with stakeholders are ongoing, with a final decision expected after a comprehensive review.
The move highlights persistent challenges in reforming Nigeria’s port pricing system amid economic pressures.
The council reiterates its commitment to protecting cargo owners and maintaining a balanced maritime environment.
