Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State government warns of rising dangers from unsafe products and reaffirms commitment to stronger consumer protection measures amid growing global trade risks.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu raises concerns on Tuesday during World Consumer Rights Day, highlighting increasing exposure to defective goods, counterfeit medicines and misleading marketing practices.
“Millions of injuries occur globally each year due to unsafe products, with billions lost to fraudulent practices,” he says.
Represented by Attorney General Lawal Pedro, the governor stresses that digital commerce amplifies risks, enabling substandard or banned goods to cross borders through online platforms.
“Products restricted in one country can easily reach consumers elsewhere through e-commerce,” Pedro notes.
Sanwo-Olu describes consumer protection as critical to public safety, economic stability and social justice, particularly in a major commercial hub like Lagos.
He reiterates the government’s commitment to strengthening regulatory frameworks and ensuring accountability in both physical and digital marketplaces.
Officials say the state continues to prioritise consumer rights enforcement to protect residents from exploitation and harmful products.
