Abuja, Nigeria – Medical directors of federal tertiary hospitals call for urgent reinforcement of security around health facilities following deadly explosions in Maiduguri, including near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors condemns the coordinated attacks as “barbaric and unacceptable,” warning that violence around hospitals threatens patient safety and undermines healthcare delivery.
In a statement on Tuesday, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Saad Ahmed, expresses concern that the blast near the hospital gate violates the principle of medical neutrality.
“Violence within or around healthcare facilities undermines medical neutrality, threatens lives, and erodes human dignity,” Ahmed says.
The explosions, which also hit the Monday Market and Post Office areas, sparked fear across the Borno State capital and raised fresh concerns over the safety of critical infrastructure.
Ahmed insists that attacks targeting healthcare settings amount to “a grave assault on humanity and the healthcare system,” urging authorities to act swiftly.
The committee calls on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protective measures around hospitals and other public institutions nationwide.
He stresses that safeguarding healthcare workers, patients, and infrastructure must remain a national priority requiring coordinated and sustained action.
The committee extends condolences to victims and expresses solidarity with staff and patients of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
