ABAKALIKI, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has inaugurated a state-level task force in Ebonyi to combat the spread of counterfeit medicines and unsafe processed foods.
The task force was launched on Friday in Abakaliki by the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the South-East Zonal Director Festus Ukadike.
Adeyeye said, “The mandate of the task force includes enforcing standards, conducting intelligence-driven surveillance, removing illegal products from circulation, and strengthening public awareness,” she said.
She added that the team would also support legitimate manufacturers and traders by ensuring that compliant businesses are not undermined by counterfeiters.
Adeyeye expressed confidence that the initiative would protect public health and reduce the economic burden associated with fake drugs.
The task force comprises representatives from NAFDAC, the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Police Force.
Chairman of the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs Martins Iluyomade, who joined the inauguration virtually from Lagos, noted that the team is empowered under the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs Act, Cap C34, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
