Alausa Orders Six-Month NESRI Review, Demands Results on Education Reforms

ABUJA, Nigeria – Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has directed coordinators of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) to accelerate the implementation of key education reforms, insisting that every outstanding commitment must translate into measurable improvements across Nigeria’s education system.
Alausa gave the directive on Friday during the Ministerial Deliverables Meeting on NESRI in Abuja, where ministry officials conducted a six-month review of progress since the initiative’s February retreat and agreed on fresh timelines to fast-track implementation.
“Today is not about celebrating what we have done and going home. It is about looking at what we have done, what remains to be done and how we can finish what we have started,” Alausa said.
He stressed that deliverables should only be regarded as completed after achieving their full objectives, warning against closing projects simply because implementation has commenced or partial milestones have been achieved.
According to the minister, programme coordinators and responsible officials must take full ownership of their assignments, address implementation challenges promptly and remain accountable for agreed targets.
He said the Federal Government remains focused on expanding access to quality education while equipping learners with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in a rapidly changing global economy.
The minister identified Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), girl-child education, digitalisation, quality assurance and reducing the number of out-of-school children as major priorities under the NESRI reform agenda.
Alausa further emphasised that the success of the ministry would be measured by tangible improvements experienced by learners and schools rather than the number of meetings held or programmes launched.
He urged directors and programme coordinators to strengthen collaboration, maintain clear ownership of assigned responsibilities and remain focused on delivering measurable outcomes.
