GUSAU, Nigeria – The Zamfara State Government renews its commitment to combating gender-based violence by strengthening support for the Huriyya Dauda Lawal Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Gusau.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Social Development Aisha Anka gave the assurance on Friday while receiving a UNICEF delegation during an assessment visit to the facility.
“The centre operates 24 hours daily, offering free medical care, psychosocial counselling and confidential case management for survivors,” Anka says. “Follow-up support is also guaranteed.”
She links rising GBV cases in parts of the North-West to insecurity and social disruption, assuring that the government is working with security agencies, the judiciary and community leaders to ensure offenders face prosecution.
“We must strengthen community awareness, encourage early reporting and reinforce institutional response to protect women and children,” she adds.
UNICEF pledges continued technical support and collaboration to improve survivor services and capacity at the centre.
