ZAMFARA, Nigeria – The African Union condemns deadly attacks in Zamfara State that kill more than 50 civilians and lead to the abduction of women and children.
In a statement on Sunday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf describes the assault as “heinous and coordinated terrorist attacks” carried out on February 21, 2026.
The union says it “unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children,” calling them grave violations of human rights.
Youssouf expresses solidarity with Nigeria, extends condolences to families of the victims and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
“The African Union reaffirms its unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting peace,” the statement says.
The AU calls for the immediate, safe and unconditional release of all abducted women and children, urging stronger coordinated action to prevent further attacks.
The condemnation follows Thursday night’s raid on Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in Anka Local Government Area, where armed bandits stormed the community with heavy weapons.
A resident says attackers block all access roads before opening fire. “After blocking the roads, the bandits started shooting at sight, and villagers ran helter-skelter,” he says.
The assault lasts into the early hours of Friday, leaving dozens of dead, several injured and many missing, according to residents.
The incident renews pressure on authorities to strengthen security across north-western Nigeria.
