KADUNA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s drug regulator warns parents and caregivers after discovering tampered SMA Gold infant milk formula in circulation in Kaduna State.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control issues Public Alert No. 06/2026 on Sunday, saying investigators identify falsified manufacturing and expiry dates on the product.
NAFDAC says the affected SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900g) bears batch number 22939510A1206, with an illegally extended expiry date of January 2027.
“The product allegedly causes gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant,” the agency says.
Laboratory examination reveals that the date sticker placed over the original markings differs from the manufacturer’s printed information, confirming deliberate revalidation.
NAFDAC notes that the registration number on the tin corresponds to genuine SMA Gold produced for Nigeria by Nestlé, but stresses that the altered product is unsafe.
“False dating misleads consumers about freshness and nutritional quality,” the agency warns. “Expired infant formula may contain microbial contamination and degraded nutrients.”
NAFDAC orders nationwide surveillance and directs officials to remove the product from shelves immediately.
Retailers and distributors are urged to source products only from licensed suppliers, while parents are advised to verify packaging details carefully.
The agency asks healthcare professionals and consumers to report suspected cases through its Med-Safety app, e-reporting portal or nearest NAFDAC office.
