GUSAU, Nigeria – The Zamfara State Government sets up a high-level technical committee to identify a suitable site for a proposed airstrip, aiming to improve security operations, logistics and socio-economic connectivity across the state.
The decision, announced on Saturday by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, underscores the administration’s push to strengthen rapid response to insecurity while expanding critical transport infrastructure.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Lawal Barau Bungudu, says the committee brings together key stakeholders from state ministries, local governments, traditional institutions and security agencies to ensure strict compliance with planning and safety standards.
“The constitution of this technical committee ensures the airstrip is located in a site that meets all regulatory, safety and operational requirements,” Bungudu says.
According to the ministry, a technical team is already conducting field inspections, stakeholder engagements and environmental assessments in line with established aviation and land-use guidelines.
Officials say the committee will recommend a parcel of land upon completing its work, allowing the state government to take an informed decision on project execution. “The outcome of this exercise will guide decisions that directly support security operations and long-term economic development,” the statement adds.
The committee is chaired by Engr Haruna Dikko, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, while Engr Amiru Musa Anka, Director of Civil Engineering, leads field operations and serves as secretary.
The project aligns with Governor Dauda Lawal’s broader infrastructure agenda, which prioritises security, investment attraction and sustainable growth.
Experts say the proposed airstrip could significantly improve aerial surveillance, emergency response times and movement of goods, while stimulating commercial activity in surrounding communities once completed.
