FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike
ABUJA, Nigeria – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has praised resident doctors for ending their week-long strike, describing the decision as being in the best interest of Abuja residents.
Speaking on Friday during the flag-off of the Northern Parkway construction, Wike commended the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCTA), for calling off the industrial action, which began on 15 September.
“First of all, let me thank the resident doctors of the FCT who have seen reason to call off their strike in the interest of the FCT and the nation,” Wike said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Chief of Staff, and Senate mediation team in brokering peace.
Africa Health Report earlier reported that the doctors would resume duties on 22 September following Senate intervention, though none of their outstanding demands—including arrears of allowances, promotions, and improved hospital infrastructure—have yet been met.
ARD-FCTA President, Dr George Ebong, noted that members agreed to suspend the strike after assurances from lawmakers. However, he warned that doctors would review progress within weeks and consider fresh action if promises were not kept.
Wike insisted the government had approved most of the demands, urging patience. “There is no need for blackmail. We are working for the citizens of Abuja and Nigeria,” he stated.
The strike had crippled services in 14 hospitals across the FCT, leaving patients stranded before the truce.
