LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) urges residents to remain vigilant against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as Yuletide festivities increase social gatherings, travel, and intimate interactions across the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, LSACA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Folakemi Animashaun, warns that festive celebrations often heighten risky behaviour, making informed personal choices essential to public health.
“Prevention remains the most effective tool in stopping the spread of HIV,” Animashaun says. “The Yuletide should be a season of joy, not regret. Every Lagos resident has a role to play in protecting their health and that of others.”
She urges residents to practise safer sex, avoid high-risk behaviours, and take advantage of available health services. The agency stresses that stigma and discrimination continue to undermine HIV prevention, testing, and treatment efforts in the state. “The Yuletide is a season of love, unity, and reflection,” Animashaun adds. “We must consciously extend this love to people living with HIV by rejecting stigma in all its forms. HIV is not a moral failing; it is a health condition.”

The agency encourages early testing, noting that timely treatment allows people living with HIV to lead long, healthy, and productive lives. Parents, faith-based organisations, community leaders, and youth groups are also called upon to promote accurate information and foster stigma-free conversations around HIV prevention, especially during the festive period.
LSACA reiterates that responsible choices during the holidays can save lives and protect families beyond the season.
