ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of the country from Wednesday through Friday, warning residents to brace for strong winds and possible weather-related disruptions.
In its latest three-day weather outlook issued on Wednesday, the agency predicted patches of cloud with thunderstorms over parts of northern Nigeria during the morning hours on Wednesday.
States expected to experience moderate rainfall include Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa, while Kaduna and other parts of the North-East are forecast to witness heavier thunderstorms later in the day.
NiMet also projected cloudy conditions over the North-Central region, with morning thunderstorms expected in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa states.
By the afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is expected across Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and the FCT.
For Thursday, NiMet predicted continued thunderstorms across Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe states, with widespread rainfall expected across the northern region later in the day.
On Friday, the agency forecast morning thunderstorms over Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba states before rainfall spreads across much of northern Nigeria later in the day.
Cloudy skies with thunderstorms are also expected across North-Central states, while moderate rainfall is forecast for parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo and other states in the South-East and South-South.
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to take precautionary measures.
“Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The public should take adequate precautions and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collisions,” the agency stated.
