ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s police deploy elite tactical units nationwide to secure Christmas and New Year celebrations, placing the force on heightened alert amid increased festive movement.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun orders the deployment of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Command, Police Mobile Force, and other specialised teams to churches, markets, highways and crowded public spaces.
In a statement on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin says the strategy combines intelligence-led operations with visible policing. “All Zonal AIGs and State Command CPs are directed to intensify patrols, raids on criminal hideouts, and confidence-building engagements,” he states.
Police units including the Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Highway Patrol, Marine Police, and Airwing are activated to monitor expressways and blackspots nationwide.
Hundeyin assures the public that officers are instructed to remain professional and courteous, while Egbetokun urges citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly.
