ABUJA, Nigeria – The United States Department of State has provided $5 million to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support acutely malnourished children in Northwest Nigeria.
In a statement on Thursday, the US Mission to Nigeria said the funding will enable UNICEF to reach at least 70,000 children with lifesaving nutrition assistance.
The contribution will finance ready-to-use therapeutic food, essential medicines and other humanitarian supplies for vulnerable children. The US described the support as a demonstration of its global leadership in humanitarian relief.
Northwest Nigeria continues to battle severe food insecurity and acute malnutrition driven by conflict, displacement and limited access to farmland and basic services.
UNICEF operates several nutrition programmes in the region, providing therapeutic food and medical treatment for children suffering from severe malnutrition. The US remains one of the largest donors supporting these interventions.
