IMO, Nigeria – The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) threatens a nationwide shutdown following what it describes as a violent attack on workers at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State.
According to the union, armed police officers storm the facility, assault staff, vandalise equipment, and hold workers at gunpoint in an attempt to enforce an “illegal outage.”
In a strongly worded statement on Monday, Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike says the incident amounts to “gangsterism and unprofessional conduct.”
He alleges that officers forcibly entered control rooms, destroyed personal belongings including laptops and vehicles, vandalised CCTV systems, and abducted workers to an undisclosed location.
“Staff were beaten, assaulted, and compelled to open breakers under duress,” the statement reads. The union insists that its members cannot continue working under conditions of intimidation and threats to life.
NUEE has already instructed workers in Imo State to halt all operations until safety is guaranteed.
It also demands:Immediate release of abducted staff, medical attention for assaulted workers, and replacement of damaged property
A formal commitment from TCN, the Ministry of Power, and the Inspector General of Police to protect all electricity workers nationwide
The union warns of a full national service withdrawal if these demands are not met. A shutdown could cripple hospitals, airports, water systems, and essential services, raising fears of widespread disruption.
