Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa announcing the integration of NgREN and TERAS digital platforms in Abuja.
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has unveiled a major digital infrastructure upgrade designed to transform teaching, research collaboration and data-sharing across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The Ministry of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa announced on Wednesday that the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) has now been integrated with the Tertiary Education, Research, Applications, and Services (TERAS) platform, enabling high-speed connectivity and cloud-based learning in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The Minister described the development as “a significant step in modernising Nigeria’s higher education system”, adding that the new digital backbone will support e-learning, virtual laboratories, remote research participation and academic innovation.
“This integration marks a leap forward in deepening digital transformation across tertiary education,” the ministry said. “It will enhance institutional collaboration, improve teaching outcomes and expand access to global research resources.”
According to officials, the project is backed by the World Bank through the State Programme to Support Education Sector Strengthening and Equity (SPESSE) and the Africa Centres of Excellence Impact (ACE Impact) initiative.
“With this, Nigerian students and researchers can compete globally,” Alausa noted. “This is about empowering institutions with the tools to shape the future.”
