ZAMFARA, Nigeria – The Coalition of Nurses in Zamfara has embarked on an indefinite strike, protesting alleged salary discrimination by the state government.
In a letter dated 11 September 2025, coalition chairman, Dr Kabiru Zamau accused officials of excluding over 1,000 nurses from recent salary benefits approved for health workers, while applying them only to doctors.
“Consequently, and as a last resort, nurses of Zamfara State have been forced to withdraw their services,” the letter said.
The strike began on Thursday and could spread to federal institutions such as the Federal Medical Centre Gusau if demands are unmet within 24 hours.
The nurses warned the action could worsen the cholera outbreak in the state. “Allowing the entire nursing workforce to withdraw their services at such a critical juncture would be an unprecedented failure of governance,” the coalition wrote.
Governor Dauda Lawal has been urged to intervene urgently.
