LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Mathematics remains compulsories for all students seeking university admission in Nigeria, reversing confusion from an earlier statement.
The clarification came on Sunday through the Federal Ministry of Education spokesperson, Boriowo Folashade.
She said English and Mathematics “remain fundamental for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning.”
“The policy review does not exempt any student from these core subjects,” the statement emphasised, noting that the reform simply aims to modernise admission procedures and encourage inclusivity.
Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa explained that the change aligns Nigeria’s education standards with international best practices.
“Our goal is a flexible but fair admission framework that strengthens student competency,” he said.
The Ministry advised students and parents to rely only on verified government channels for policy updates, warning against misinformation circulating online.
