LAGOS, Nigeria – Four people have died and several others have been injured after a container-laden truck overturned onto a passenger bus on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos, prompting emergency response operations and renewed concerns about road safety.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the crash occurred early on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, near Alaro City. The truck was carrying a 20-foot container when it collided with a Toyota Hiace bus.

According to the agency, preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling at excessive speed while ascending the bridge before the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned onto the bus. LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said a distress call prompted the deployment of the agency’s Beta Whales response team from its Epe base.

The agency reported that four adult men died at the scene and 16 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency responders began recovery operations, provided assistance to victims and introduced traffic management measures.

The Lagos State Government expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery. LASEMA also reported two separate road incidents in Lagos on Wednesday.

In the first, a truck with registration number KTU-940XT struck a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road, at about 4.09am. The agency said the truck mounted the road median and obstructed traffic. Preliminary information attributed the incident to reckless driving.

LASEMA deployed its Tiger response team from C3 Base and diverted traffic while recovery equipment was brought in to remove the vehicle. The truck was subsequently taken to Abattoir Police Station for investigation and safekeeping, and the road was cleared and reopened.
