ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to take precautions as dust haze, thunderstorms and rainfall are expected across parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, the agency forecast slight dust haze on Monday across Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto states.
The North-east is expected to experience sunny conditions throughout the three-day period, while parts of the North-central region could see patches of cloud and isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rain. NiMet listed Kogi, Kwara, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa among areas where thunderstorms and light rainfall may occur.
Parts of the South, including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, are also expected to experience thunderstorms and light rain. On Tuesday, the agency forecast sunny and hazy conditions across the North, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain possible over parts of southern Taraba. Most southern states could experience thunderstorms and light rain later in the day.
Wednesday is expected to bring sunny and hazy conditions to the North, while the South may experience cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. “People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather condition,” NiMet said.
The agency also warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms, advising residents to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances where it is safe to do so and avoid standing under tall trees during storms because of the risk of falling branches.
NiMet urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation to support operational planning. It also encouraged the public to follow regular weather updates through its official website.
