ABUJA, Nigeria – The European Union (EU) and the German Embassy in Abuja have launched the German Nigerian Flare4Value Project, a landmark initiative designed to curb gas flaring, optimise Nigeria’s gas resources, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
In a statement on Sunday, the announcement was made during this year’s Green Diplomacy Week, underscores Europe’s continued support for Nigeria’s clean energy transition and sustainable industrial development.
Declaring the event open, Head of the German Nigerian Hydrogen Office, Kristina Fuerst, described the initiative as “a milestone in the German Nigerian partnership and a testament to our joint commitment to transforming environmental challenges into economic opportunities.”
“Gas flaring reduction is not only a climate priority but also a gateway to energy access, industrial growth, and sustainable development,” she said.
Reinforcing this message, Johannes Lehne, Deputy Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria, said: “By capturing and utilising flare gas, we not only cut emissions but also create value for power generation and industry.”
He added that Flare4Value exemplifies Germany’s cooperation with Nigeria under the EU’s broader climate action framework.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Dr Vitalis Obi, said the project highlights Nigeria’s resolve to reduce emissions and unlock the full potential of its gas assets through strategic partnerships.
Representing the EU Delegation, Godfrey Ogbemudia, Programme Manager for Energy, Circular Economy, and Climate Change, noted that the initiative will not only protect the environment but also foster cleaner energy and new business opportunities across Nigeria.
