LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has directed public and private schools to tighten safety, hygiene and sanitation measures as pupils and students return for the 2026/2027 academic session on Monday, September 14.
The directive, issued by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, is aimed at ensuring schools provide safe, clean and healthy environments for learners and staff throughout the new academic year.
Alli-Balogun, in a statement on Friday, welcomed pupils, students, teachers, school administrators, non-teaching staff and other stakeholders back to school, saying the new session presents an opportunity to strengthen learning, discipline, character development, innovation and excellence.
“Protecting the health, safety and well-being of our learners and staff is a shared responsibility,” Alli-Balogun said.
Schools Told to Improve Ventilation, Sanitation
The commissioner directed school authorities to avoid unnecessary overcrowding, ensure adequate ventilation and promptly address unsafe facilities and health concerns.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, also wished pupils, students, teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff a “safe, productive and successful academic session.”
