ABUJA, Nigeria – The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the suspension of examinations at Nigerian law schools following allegations that female Muslim candidates wearing hijabs were denied access to examination halls.

The organisation made the demand on Sunday, after reports emerged that some candidates were prevented from entering examination centres on Saturday, October 31. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, MURIC condemned the alleged restrictions, describing them as a disruption of the candidates’ right to pursue their education.

Akintola alleged that some female Muslim candidates preparing for their final examinations ahead of their call to the Bar were harassed and made to stand outside examination halls for about an hour. He claimed that some were only allowed into the halls after removing their hijabs.

The MURIC director said the organisation received complaints from affected candidates, distressed parents and other concerned Muslims while the incident was unfolding. He expressed concern about the emotional distress the reported restrictions had caused the candidates and their families.
