ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has begun a three-week vacation in Europe, with the Presidency saying the break is intended to allow him to rest after months of intensive governance while preparing for the demanding political activities expected ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President departed Nigeria on Sunday to commence his annual leave, with presidential aides insisting that government business will continue uninterrupted during his absence and that he will remain actively engaged in the nation’s affairs from abroad.
Speaking to journalists, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, said the vacation follows an extended period of sustained attention to national issues, including security, economic reforms and governance.
“The President has had several months—six, seven months—of being engaged with state matters. We’ve seen monumental changes, monumental decisions taken with our security, with our economy and so many other things as pertains to the running of the affairs of this country,” Dare said.
He explained that the break would give Tinubu an opportunity to recharge before what is expected to be an intense period of political engagement leading to the 2027 elections.
According to Dare, the President’s absence should not be interpreted as a slowdown in governance, stressing that Tinubu will continue to monitor developments and provide direction on key national issues while away.
“The President will remain connected to the machinery of government and continue to discharge his responsibilities from wherever he is,” he said.
The Presidency maintained that the leave forms part of the President’s annual schedule and comes after months of policy decisions aimed at addressing security challenges, economic reforms and other matters of national importance.
