ABIA, Nigeria – The Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology in Aba has secured accreditation for its Medical Laboratory Science and Dispensing Opticianry programmes, in a development expected to strengthen healthcare training in the state.
Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the accreditation on Tuesday during a briefing with journalists at Government House in Umuahia.
Kanu attributed the achievement to sustained efforts by the state Ministry of Health and its agencies to secure accreditation for academic programmes in government-owned health institutions. He said the development formed part of the state government’s broader reforms aimed at improving the quality of health education and strengthening the institutions responsible for training healthcare professionals.
Kanu noted that the accreditation reflected “the state government’s commitment to improving the quality of healthcare education and strengthening institutions responsible for training health workers.”
The accreditation is expected to support the college’s efforts to improve its academic standards and contribute to the development of skilled personnel for the healthcare sector. The state government has continued to pursue measures aimed at improving training standards in its health institutions, according to the commissioner.
The latest accreditation represents progress in those efforts, although the announcement did not specify the duration of the accreditation, the number of students affected or any changes to the programmes’ admission capacity.
It also did not identify the regulatory bodies responsible for granting accreditation to the two programmes.
Further details on the accreditation status and its implications for prospective students would help applicants understand the programmes’ current standing and requirements.
The development comes amid continued efforts by governments and healthcare institutions to strengthen the training of professionals needed to support medical services.
