LAGOS – The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to convert waste generated from abattoirs into biogas, organic fertiliser and other commercially valuable products as part of efforts to improve sanitation, reduce environmental pollution and promote a circular economy.
The initiative was announced on Friday during a workshop for abattoir operators held in Ajah by the Office of Environmental Services under the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
Speaking at the event on Friday, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Gaji Tajudeen, represented by the Director of Public Sanitation Utility, Rahman Fagbolade, said materials commonly regarded as waste could become valuable economic resources when properly processed.
According to him, blood, wastewater, rumen contents and faecal matter generated at slaughter facilities can be converted into biogas and organic fertiliser, while bones, horns and hooves can serve as raw materials for various industries.
The workshop, themed “Red to Green: From Waste Disposal to Resource Recovery,” focused on promoting sustainable waste management practices capable of creating jobs and generating additional income.
Tajudeen warned that poor disposal of abattoir waste contributes to blocked drainage systems, environmental pollution, offensive odours and public health risks.
He said adopting proper waste segregation and recycling practices would not only improve sanitation but also support enterprise development and strengthen the state’s circular economy.
“When properly segregated, processed and managed, materials traditionally regarded as waste can become valuable resources that support enterprise development, job creation, additional income generation and the growth of a circular economy,” he said.
The permanent secretary assured operators that the state government would continue to provide education and enforce environmental standards to improve sanitation across slaughter facilities.
He urged operators to view compliance with environmental regulations as an investment in public health, business sustainability and consumer confidence.
