Presidential adviser, Sunday Dare
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has dismissed the World Bank’s report claiming that 139 million Nigerians live in poverty, describing the data as outdated and misleading.
Presidential Adviser Sunday Dare said on Wednesday that the methodology “fails to reflect Nigeria’s economic recovery and reforms.”
“The $2.15 daily benchmark under 2017 PPP is unrealistic,” he said on X. “It assumes ₦100,000 monthly income as the poverty line, far above Nigeria’s ₦70,000 minimum wage.”
Dare explained that the data relied on the 2018/19 consumption survey, ignoring ongoing diversification, agricultural expansion, and fiscal reforms.
“The report omits key indicators of our informal and subsistence economies,” he said. “Nigeria’s economy is on a recovery path, and reforms are yielding results.”
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive growth through social investments and structural transformation.
