LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the newly inaugurated Agege Fresh Food Hub will strengthen food security, improve food distribution and reduce post-harvest losses as the state expands its integrated food supply network.
The governor made the remarks on Wednesday during an inspection of the facility, describing the project as a strategic investment designed to connect farmers, aggregators, suppliers and retailers through a more efficient food distribution system. During the visit, Sanwo-Olu drew attention after purchasing the largest fish on display at the hub’s seafood section.
“This is about building a food system that works efficiently, from the farmer to the consumer, while ensuring that our people have access to fresh and affordable food,” the governor said.
He explained that the Agege Fresh Food Hub would provide a more organised trading environment for food vendors while creating economic opportunities and improving access to fresh produce for residents.
The 7,000-square-metre facility, developed by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, features 4,000 square metres of trading space capable of accommodating between 350 and 400 traders.
It also includes 800 metric tonnes of dry storage, 300 metric tonnes of cold storage, parking space for up to 90 vehicles and 10 electric vehicle charging points.
“We are deliberately putting infrastructure in place to reduce waste, improve storage and make food distribution more structured,” Sanwo-Olu said.
According to him, the hub-and-spoke model will enable food produced or aggregated in Epe to be transported more efficiently to communities across Lagos, including Agege, improving supply chain efficiency and reducing food losses.
“When we reduce post-harvest losses and improve logistics, we are not only supporting farmers; we are also helping to make food more available and affordable for Lagosians,” he added.
