NIGER, Nigeria – Niger Gas says it is preparing to increase medical oxygen production fivefold to meet growing demand from hospitals across Enugu State as part of efforts to improve access to essential healthcare supplies.
The Niger Gas oxygen supply expansion will increase daily production from about 80 cylinders to at least 400 cylinders when the facility reaches full operational capacity.
Chief Operating Officer Amos Egesi announced the expansion on Tuesday while conducting members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu, around the company’s facility.
The visit forms part of the Enugu State Government’s tour of projects being implemented under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.
Egesi says the increased production will enable Niger Gas to meet the oxygen requirements of hospitals across the state.
He explains that the company resumed full operations about four months ago after decades of inactivity and has already begun attracting customers from neighbouring states.
According to him, traders from Onitsha now visit the facility to place orders for its products.
The company currently produces natural oxygen, medical oxygen and acetylene used for industrial welding.
Egesi commended the Enugu State Government for reviving the company, describing the project as a catalyst for industrial growth and employment.
He says renewed operations have stimulated economic activity within the surrounding community, with increased land acquisition, housing development and business opportunities.
Niger Gas was originally established under the administration of the late Premier of the former Eastern Region, Michael Okpara.
The Enugu State Government is reviving the facility as part of a broader strategy to promote industrialisation, create jobs and improve access to critical healthcare infrastructure, including reliable medical oxygen.
The expansion is expected to strengthen oxygen availability for healthcare facilities while supporting emergency and critical care services across Enugu State.
