ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria is strengthening aviation safety standards after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) secures ISO 9001:2015 certification for aeronautical meteorological services at three additional airports.
The Nigeria aviation safety certification covers Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports following a third-party audit conducted from July 20 to 23, 2026, by Canada-based Certech Inc.
NiMet announced the development on Tuesday, saying the audit confirmed that its aviation meteorological products and services at the three airports meet ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
The latest certification also includes the successful recertification of meteorological services at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Aminu Kano International Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Enugu International Airport and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
The development brings the total number of certified international airports under the revised certificate to eight.
The certificate is valid for three years and is subject to annual surveillance audits.
The certification follows a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to NiMet Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof Charles Anosike, to enforce strict safety standards and strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation requirements.
In a letter dated July 26, Certech Lead Auditor and Director Frank Strohmeier say the audit met its objectives through a systematic process focused on risks and organisational objectives.
Anosike welcomes the certification and credits NiMet’s quality management team for the achievement.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” Anosike says.
“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he adds.
