NASARAWA, Nigeria – Academic activities at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), are suspended indefinitely after the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declares a total strike over unresolved federal and local issues.
The ASUU NSUK branch announces the industrial action on Monday following a congress where members reviewed the failure of authorities to implement the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union, as well as other outstanding issues affecting academic staff.
The union says the strike follows several attempts to resolve the disputes through dialogue with relevant authorities, but those engagements have failed to produce concrete action.
“Dialogue without implementation cannot continue indefinitely,” the union says, insisting that agreements reached between the government and ASUU must be respected and implemented.
The decision is contained in a statement signed by Zubairu Loko, chairperson of the ASUU NSUK branch. The union says it obtained the required approval from its National Executive Council before commencing the action.
ASUU describes the strike as total, comprehensive and indefinite, meaning teaching and other academic activities at the university are expected to remain suspended until the outstanding issues are addressed.
The union apologises to students, parents and other members of the university community for the disruption, but says the responsibility for ending the dispute rests with the authorities.
“The Union believes that the responsibility for restoring industrial harmony rests on the urgent resolution of the issues that necessitated the strike,” it says.
ASUU NSUK calls on the Federal Government, Nasarawa State Government, the university’s Governing Council and management, and other stakeholders to intervene urgently.
The union says concrete implementation of outstanding agreements and resolution of local issues are necessary before academic activities can resume at Nasarawa State University.
