LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has arrested a suspected vandal accused of removing structural materials from a concrete road barrier at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, along Ikorodu Road.
The barrier was installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the expressway through unauthorised routes and reduce the risk of accidents involving motorists and pedestrians.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest in a post on X on Saturday.
Wahab said the suspect was apprehended during a monitoring and enforcement operation conducted by government officials the previous day.
According to the commissioner, the suspect was allegedly caught removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements and other structural materials from the concrete barrier.
The materials play a role in maintaining the strength and stability of the structure, which was installed as part of efforts to improve road safety.
Wahab said the suspect had been taken into custody and would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
He described the arrest as part of the state government’s continued enforcement against the vandalism of public infrastructure.
The government warned that the destruction of safety infrastructure could expose pedestrians and motorists to avoidable risks while increasing the cost of maintaining public facilities.
The state administration also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring that facilities built to improve the safety and wellbeing of residents are not destroyed or illegally removed.
