ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting, marking the first time the global gathering of weather, water and climate experts will be held in Africa.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) announced on Wednesday that the high-level meeting will take place from October 13 to 15, 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.
The meeting, themed “Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainable Investment in Weather, Water and Climate Services,” will bring together ministers, development partners, financial institutions, academia, the private sector and users of weather and climate services.
Participants are expected to deliberate on strategies to strengthen hydrometeorological systems that support disaster risk reduction, food and nutrition security, aviation safety, water resources management, renewable energy, public health, climate adaptation and community resilience.
Director-General of NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, Professor Charles Anosike, described the hosting rights as a major milestone for the country and the continent.
“Nigeria is proud to host the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026 and promote the critical relevance of weather, water and climate services for de-risking national, regional and global socio-economic activities,” he said.
