NiMet Partners AKADEMIYA2063 to Deploy AI for Climate-Smart Agriculture, Food Security

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a strategic partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 to deploy artificial intelligence (AI), climate data analytics and evidence-based research to strengthen climate resilience, improve agricultural planning and enhance food security in Nigeria.
The partnership was formalised on Tuesday through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, and AKADEMIYA2063 Managing Director, Dr Debisi Araba, alongside senior officials of both organisations.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Anosike said NiMet is embracing AI and digital innovation to modernise weather forecasting and climate services. He disclosed that the agency has established an AI Research Team to explore the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency, noting that the collaboration would accelerate those efforts.
Araba described the partnership as a significant step towards strengthening Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking. He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would support climate resilience, sustainable agriculture and informed policy decisions.
Under the agreement, both organisations will collaborate on AI-powered climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making. A Joint Technical Committee will also be established to coordinate implementation, identify priority research areas and develop innovative climate services for farmers, policymakers and other stakeholders.
The initiative is expected to improve access to reliable weather information, strengthen climate-smart agriculture and support Nigeria’s broader efforts to achieve food security and sustainable development.
