ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government, in partnership with UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan African University (PAU), has launched a three-day mobile learning initiative for teachers aimed at strengthening professional development through digital technology.
The training programme, which opened in Abuja on Monday, brings together educators and school leaders under the theme: “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.”
According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the programme runs from 21 to 23 July 2026 and is funded by the Government of Japan.
The mobile learning initiative for teachers is being implemented across Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan, with a focus on expanding access to continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers and school leaders.
The programme leverages mobile technology to address longstanding barriers to teacher training, including distance, limited infrastructure and time constraints.
Organisers said the platform allows educators to access learning materials anytime and anywhere through a low-data, offline-friendly system, making professional development more accessible and inclusive.
The Federal Ministry of Education said the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to improving teacher quality through digital innovation and expanding equitable access to education.
According to the ministry, strengthening teachers’ professional skills is critical to improving learning outcomes, building resilient education systems and supporting quality education across Nigeria and the wider African continent.
