LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have launched a School Breakfast Initiative aimed at tackling classroom hunger among primary school pupils, improving school attendance and learning outcomes, while encouraging private sector participation in child nutrition across Nigeria.
The initiative, known as Adopt-a-School: Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS, is unveiled on Tuesday under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme in partnership with all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos State.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, describes the School Breakfast Initiative as an investment in Nigeria’s future, saying adequate nutrition remains essential to children’s education and development.
“When hunger is addressed, poverty is reduced. Lagos State will continue to partner with the Federal Government, private organisations, NGOs and every well-meaning individual willing to support our children. Nation-building is not the responsibility of the government alone,” she says.
National Programme Manager of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Princess Aderemi Adebowale, says Lagos is selected for the official launch because of its leadership in implementing education and social intervention programmes.
“Children do not know political parties; they only know food. Our objective is to ensure that no child starts learning on an empty stomach,” she says.
